This map details the Battle of Valcour Island; it shows the retreat of American forces back to Fort Ticonderoga, and the movement of both American and British ships. This battle is one of the first naval battles of the American Revolutionary War and the first one fought by theUnited States Navy. Under the direction of Benedict Arnold, most of the American ships were captured. However, to the American’s advantage, their defense at Lake Champlainprevented British forces from reaching the Hudson River Valley. Even though the Americans retreated, the British saw Valcour Island as a military failure and requested that William Faden remove Sir Guy Carleton’s, the commander of the British forces at Valcour, name from the map. It was thought that, if the British reached Albany by that winter, the American Revolution would’ve beenover, but this battle stalled them. Once aware the Americans couldn’t win, Benedict Arnold retreated in the veil of evening fog for Fort Crown Point. By morning, he reached Schuyler Island. During this battle, the Americans suffered 60 casualties while the British suffered 40.
