Planiglobii Terrestris Mappe Monde

Produced by the heirs of the great Johann Baptist Homann, this map provides drama and detail that is both beautiful and scientifically intriguing. The Homann heirs maintained the quality that their forefather was reknown for, and in this map made the latest updates to what was a quickly changing known world. Here we see a California, now attached to the continent, and Alaska and the surrounding region is yet unknown. The continents are well defined for the time, with some questions remaining for what was depicted of Australia, here shown as “Nova Hollandia”. This double hemispheric map is outstanding in clarity and simplicity. Complimenting the main globe are several unique hemispheric projections that show the world in different and uncommon perspectives. Also there are two views of the earths relation to the sun, in different seasons. All of these intricately engraved images are enhanced by large cartouches encapsulating the title information. These cartouches show sea monsters, mermen, as well as the hunting trophies of elephant tusks, stags and gold. The condition of the map is good with some small tears in the top margin and some minor staining in the margins, and the color is lovely and quite strong.
