This WWI propaganda poster was commissioned by the National War Garden Commission in 1918.Responsible for many war propaganda posters during World War I, this is one of Paul J. Verees’s most famous works. During WWI The Kaiser or Monarch of Germany was a common stepping stone for American patriotism, and it set the united states up to be a nation against fascism. This poster depicting Wilhelm’s likeness in a canned goods can, branding him as “Monarch Brand Unsweetened”. It reads, “Can Vegetables, Fruit, and the Kaiser too. Write for Free Book to National War Garden Commission, Washington, D.C.” with an illustration of a two jars containing peas and tomatoes and Kaiser Wilhelm II, emperor and King of Prussia’s head in the third jar. This fascinating piece of WWI propaganda is extremely clever as it uses canned food as an innuendo towards the importance of home preservation during the war.
