James Montgomery Flagg was an American artist and illustrator. Flagg worked in media ranging from fine art painting, political cartooning, magazine illustrations, and United States military posters. He is best remembered for his political posters. This poster’s message was to recruit marines with promises of Travel” and “Adventure” while a recruit rides a clearly agitated jaguar. At the time exotic animals were also a symbol for foreign combatants. This is a great example of Flagg’s political and comedic illustration in one poster.”
