Original leaf from a medieval manuscript Book of Hours. 14 lines of ruled text, written in Latin on animal vellum. Nine one-line alternating intials in blu and burnished gold with contrasting red and blue penwork. In fine gothic textura script.The gold D” continues Psalm 138:18-24: ” Dinumerabo… ( I will number them, and they shall be multiplied above the sand: I rose up and am still with thee…).English manuscript Books of Hours are very uncommon. In 1533 Henry VIII decreed that books relating to the practices of the Church of Rme should be destroyed. Most of the remaining examples were held secretly in private hands.
