Original leaf from a late-medieval manuscript Book of Hours. 16 lines or red-ruled Latin text, with dark brown ink in Gothic textura script on animal vellum. Nine one-line initials and seven line-extenders in gold on blue and mauve ground with delicate white tracery.The one-line illuminated A” begins Psalm 39:10-15: “Adnuntiavi?”(I have declared thy justice in a great church, lo, I will not restrain my lips?Thou art my helper and my protector: O my God, be not slack).Book of Hours are personal prayer books of a devout and status-conscious society and are not only works or art, but also cultural documents of their time.
