Original leaf from a medieval Book of Hours. 15 lines of text, ruled in red, written in Latin with dark brown in gothic script on animal vellum. Eight one-line initials alternating in gold with blue pen-work. This leaf is from Southeastern France, Aix or Marseilles, c. 1460. ( Made for a patron most likely residing in Provence, along the stretch between Aix & Marseilles – a region host to scribes & artists from all over Europe).Books of Hours are personal prayer-brooks of a devout and status-conscious society are not only works of art, but a cultural documents of their time.
