This fourth edition of Rand McNally and Co.s “Indexed Atlas of the World” was produced in 1882. Each very detailed map has light pastel coloring and identifies regions, major sea routes, railroad lines, important cities and land-forms. The atlas also included several diagrams, charts, and tables noting various commerce, religions, agriculture and more. This chart notes the number and miles of new and in operation railroad tracks in the United States from 1830 to January 1, 1881. The larger chart denotes the year, miles in operation and miles construction. The smaller chart records the number of miles of railroad in each state, showing states, miles, area in square miles, and number miles to each 36 square miles.
