Produced at the request of the British Postmaster General, John Cary made a record of the timeless English countryside that became the benchmark of county mapping. This map is from that improtant set made in 1787, and displays the quality of craftsmanship and detail that made this work famous. We see not only roads, towns and villages, but also the character of the time, in that we see notations for what was significant for the age, including castles, mines as well as commons. The detail on these copperplate engravings is masterful and the original hand color remains throughout.
