This vibrant illustration of the Peoples of the Pacific was created by Jose Miguel Covarrubias for the Golden Gate Exposition in San Francisco (1939-1940). Covarrubias was known for his caricature, publishing, fine art, illustration, cartography, and anthropology, throughout the 1920s and 1950s. This particular drawing depicts Covarrubias’ representations of people of color from the African Diaspora to Latin America and the Pacific Islands.
