Art Source International is proud to present this amazing map of the Holy Land from Abraham Ortelius” “Theatrum Orbis Terrarum.” This map was copper-plate engraved and colored by hand in the year 1570. Adapted from an earlier work by mapmakers Laicksteen and Sgrooten, Ortelius removed an inset and reoriented the map, putting east at the top. He also added graphical depictions from the old and New Testament, Jonah falling into the mouth of a great fish, and the Birth, Crucifixion and Resurrection of Christ. The “Theatrum Orbis Terrarum”, published in 1570, was the first modern atlas. Maps like this are of course highly collectible, and in fact are sought by collectors the world over, but unfortunately they are also very hard to find. Now you have the incredible opportunity to own an extremely rare and historically important map, a testament to the dedication and ingenuity of 16th century cartographers.
