Carte D Amerique’

This is a beautiful map showing us a stage in the evolution of Covens & Mortiers map of the Americas. This grand image includes a wealth of information on the latest discoveries as well as historical presidences that charted the future. We see noted the “Ligne de Demarcation” set by Pope Alexander VI which gave everything west of the line to Spain and east of the line to Portugal. This line cuts through South America and allowed the Portuguese to claim Brazil as their own terrirorty. Other notable inclusions found on this map are the fabled ‘sea of the West”, which was supposed to have engulfed most of the Pacific Northwest. There is also a primitive chain of islands, which allude to the Aleutian islands off of Alaska, yet no peninsula for it to connect with from the mainland. The heart of the continents is still a mix of substance and speculation, but the story it tells is fascinating and intriguing. The condition of this map is very good and is handsomely colored.
