Carte Des Isles De La Jamaique Et De St. Domingue, 1798 (Jamaica, Haiti, Dominican Republic)

The Carte des Isles de la Jamaïque et de St. Domingue, created by French geographer Edmé Mentelle in 1798, is a detailed map of Jamaica and Saint-Domingue (present-day Haiti and the Dominican Republic) during a pivotal period of colonial history. It illustrates the geography, settlements, plantations, and colonial borders of the islands, with a particular focus on the strategic and economic importance of Saint-Domingue, then a wealthy French colony, and Jamaica, a major British sugar-producing colony.

Mentelle, a prominent Enlightenment-era cartographer, was known for producing educational maps that combined scientific accuracy with clarity. This map was created during the Haitian Revolution (1791–1804), capturing the region’s turbulent political context. Rendered in copperplate engraving and labeled in French, the map includes decorative features like a cartouche and compass rose. It remains a valuable historical and educational artifact reflecting the colonial interests in the Caribbean at the close of the 18th century. This map was the result of a collaboration between cartographers Pierre François Tardieu, Pierre Gregoire Chanlaire, and Edme Mentelle.
