Art Source International is proud to present maps from Henry Schenk Tanner’s “New Universal Atlas”, a volume of work which in 1828 was hailed as a great advancement in the art and science of map-making. Tanner gained notoriety for this work and the one he published before it, his “New American Atlas.” Both were widely considered to be important contributions to early American cartography. This remarkable and rare map of Chili, La Plata and Uruguay was created for the 1836 edition of the “New Universal Atlas.” The unique look is framed by a sage and pink border that complements the original hand coloring in the image of the map. An inset highlights the Southern part of Patagonia. South American Indian tribes are also given, in the regions they inhabited. Rivers, lakes, mountains ranges, towns and cities are all listed at one of the greatest degrees of accuracy for maps produced at this time. This map is a true american rarity!!!
