FRAMED Map of Long Island
Out of stock
This is a fascinating and thorough glimpse of Long Island as is was undergoing great change. What was once an island of sparsely populated, sprawling farm land, here is divided into 16 or so counties, each individually hand colored. We see on the western end of the island dense urban growth with street grids and roads, but the further east we scan, the more diminished development becomes, down to just a few roads. The Long Island Rail Road is shown reaching from Brooklyn and Long Island City out to practically the ends of the island, with several proposed routes also shown. It is uncommon to see such a detailed map of just the island, but this also conveys a sense of the timbre of the time as well as aesthetic. One feature that is telling of the anticipated expansion is the addition of ring-like lines emanating from New York City, which notes the distance from Manhattan at a glance. This is a very rare map with a good deal of both historic and aesthetic appeal. This map completed with archival framing, with inner liner, cloth mat, and ornate black wood frame, and UV protective glass. Due to the size of this item, it will need to be crated and shipped to insure safe delivery, so please call for an estimate of shipping price.
