The center of the map, is a military map, titled: “Le Théâtre de la Guerre dans les Cévennes, le Languedoc et le Pays aux Environs” which translates to “The Theater of War in the Cévennes, Languedoc, and the Surrounding Region” was created by the Dutch-French cartographer Pierre Mortier in the early 1700s, likely around 1707. The map depicts the southern regions of France—specifically the Cévennes and Languedoc—during the Camisard War, a Protestant uprising that followed the revocation of the Edict of Nantes. It offers an intricate representation of the terrain, including roads, mountain passes, towns, forests, and dioceses such as Montpellier, Nîmes, Alès, and Mende. The map was used not only for military insight but also to chart guerrilla warfare routes taken by the Camisard rebels, often referred to as the “mécontents.” This map is unique in that someone added the 2 sides of inset cities to it.

Mortier, a Huguenot himself, operated from Amsterdam and often produced maps with both geographic and political aims, particularly appealing to Protestant audiences. The map reflects his distinctive cartographic style, marked by decorative cartouches, hand-coloring, and detailed engraving. Some editions were later reissued by Covens & Mortier or Cornelis Danckerts, and an English version was published in London by John Cailloué. These versions varied slightly in presentation but retained the map’s core geographic and narrative features.
