This map of Formosa and the Pescadores was compiled by General Charles Le Gendre, a French-born American officer who served as the advisor to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the Japanese Empire and in later years, also to the Korean Empire roughly from about 1872 to 1899. This map was originally published in 1870 and was published first off of mere observation. Taiwan has historically been named Formosa. There is a set of notes that detail what symbols indicate towns, islands, elevations, routes, rivers, and an slew of other information. There is also a section detailing geological formations in regions like Coal Harbor, Mo River, Tuik-Cham among others. This fascinating map is not only written in English but also in Chinese.
