This is a charming world map, giving us the latest information about the globe as it was still being explored. While the majority of the continents are well formed and recognizable, there are still some anomalies present. Perhaps most obvious is the long slender island floating off the west coast of North America, which is the island of California. This is a cartographic misconception that appeared on maps of the time. Above the “I. de California” is speculated landmass that reaches from Asia, almost to North America. Also there are irregularities seen in Australia, here referred to as “Nouvelle Hollande”, which is basically shown as a series of unconnected coast lines. Across the map we see a dotted line circumnavigating the globe, which is the track of an early explorer. Condition is good, with soft, muted hand color
